Evolution
We were looking for a place where musicians could develop ideas, where research
and experiments were possible to create music-theatre, born from music, so, that the power
of sound can move and inspire people.
Club Ghazal is creating this space for musical projects, artistically developed by
Irma Kort. Club Ghazal creates social music-theatre, with music as a
starting point, connecting with other arts.
Ghazal is poetry from ancient Persia, with love as the main subject. The most famous history
in this genre is that of Madjoen and Laila, where Madjoen finds enlightment through his
love for Laila. Our search is for the power of theatre with our love for music.
Irma Kort is one of the younger generation oboe players in the Dutch music scene.
After finishing her oboe studies in The Hague, at The Royal Conservatoire,
she developed her own style as a solo oboe player in the 'Holland Symfonia' orchestra.
Music, to her, is more than just notes to play from a score. It is meaning, feeling and
emotion in sound. It is making contrasts and colours, playing together and creating
possibilities to move; herself, her colleagues and the audience.
She is constantly researching her music; through history, instruments, technique, teaching,
theory and dance - using 'Laban Movement Analysis' as a general scheme. Her work and
ambitions can be found through: www.irmakort.nl and
www.musicandresearch.nl.
Marc Kaptijn finnished his trumpet studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory and The Royal
Academy of Music in London. Next to his busy free-lance schedule in orchestras and
ensembles he has specialized in new, contemporary repertoire. This he applies in
his quintet KWIVR. Marc sees his music and art in general as an important means to share
thoughts, emotions and new ideas. He sees personal growth and diversity as a means to tackle
the uniformity in people.
Marie-Christine Goergen's musicianship evolves around the questions 'How does music work?' and
'What does music do for and with individuals?'. As a performer she specialized in programming for
elderly people that live in the past, but find themselves with music and leave the concert
happier. As a musicologist she researched the effect of music on people with Alzheimer. Music
seems to calm these patients, and gives them as sense of time and memory. Her research is published
at www.musicandresearch.nl.
